The “family” Saturday Matinee promises to be one of the most exciting
concerts of the season. The program includes Camille
Saint-Saens’ popular “Carnival of the Animals” with the dual
piano performance by Anne-Marie Thompson and Dr. Gregg Hallbauer.
Thompson, currently a piano teacher in Ft. Worth, holds a degree in
piano performance from Texas Christian University. Hallbauer, a Conroe
physician, is a graduate of Baylor University with a degree in piano
performance.
In addition to the dual piano performance, Alfredo Federico Eulogio
Olivera de la Vega (“Freddy”) will be the featured guitar soloist for
Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for Guitar in D Major.
Freddy is back by popular demand after his brilliant classical guitar
performance with the Conroe Symphony in February 2007. A native of
Argentina, he is an extremely talented musician who plays several
musical instruments in addition to the guitar, including the piano and
violin.
The Symphony is expanding its “educational outreach” programs in 2008
and a new event, “The Junior Celebrity Contest,” will be introduced at
“The Magic of Music” concert. Under the direction of the CSO Education
Committee, chaired by Carol Hamilton, the area 5th and 6th graders will
be invited to participate in the contest by writing a one page, creative
story on “Why I Would Like to be a Conductor.” The top five (5)
finalists will be selected and recognized at the concert. The first
place winner will then be announced and given a special presentation by
the Music Director, Don Hutson.

This cowboy-themed concert is scheduled at the beginning of the very
popular Montgomery County Fair and Livestock show in Conroe. Don
Hutson, the CSO Music Director, has programmed a “fun-filled evening” to
include John Williams’ Overture to the Cowboys, as well
as selections from “Rodeo” by Aaron Copland, and
Roy Phillippe’s Wild Wild West.
In keeping with the “cowboy theme,” the CSO Education Committee is
sponsoring a new educational event, “The Junior Cowboy Poetry Contest”
for area high school students. Dave Parsons, the Montgomery County Poet
Laureate, is assisting the Committee in developing guidelines for
contestants in this new, exciting activity. According to Executive
Director, Dr. Aline Arnold, the Symphony is pleased to announce that
Carol Hall, a New York performer, composer and lyricist, will be the
Final Judge of the contest. Hall is best known as the Composer and
Lyricist of the Broadway show, “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” The
poem selected as the “grand prize winner” will be arranged by Hall and
Hubert Arnold, also a professional composer from New York, and will be
premiered by the Conroe Symphony Orchestra at the March concert.
The annual “Celebrity Conductor Contest,” a major fundraiser for the
Symphony, will be concluded at this concert, with the announcement of
the Celebrity Conductor. He or she will then conduct the Orchestra in a
special number selected by Music Director Hutson.
